Wire enclosure for a drop hammer

Problem

A company using a drop hammer to stamp medallions and military buttons recognised their responsibility to ensure the safety of operators.

In the operations the major hazard was a trapping point created with the opening and closing of the dies.

Solution

The company designed a steel mesh and partial polycarbonate guard to fully enclose the hazard. The guarding arrangements include both fixed and movable parts. All movable parts are interlocked to the machine process. When the guard is pulled down into position a limit switch operates an air cylinder which locks the guard into place. Once the guard is locked in place a second cylinder is activated and the foot pedal is released. The operation of the drop hammer is then allowed to take place.
