Glass clearly superior
UK trials of recycled glass filtration media show it can remove up to 70 per cent more solids from wastewater than traditional sand filters.
Unlike sand, the recycled glass showed no tendency to clog, or ‘bind’, when faced with high loadings of suspended material.
Performance on backwashing – pumping clean water backwards through filters, flushing them clean of sludge – matched or bettered that of sand.
The process may also help the UK meet its EU packaging directive target of recycling 60 per cent of used glass by 2008, up from 42 per cent currently.
