Safety of tyre and rim assemblies

Problem

Accidents resulting in fatalities and serious injuries have highlighted the need to use a safety device whilst handling pneumatic tyre assemblies.

In most cases the accidents have occurred when the locking rings have blown off the rims during inflation of the tyre. A simple guard can be used to prevent fastenings from striking the operator on those occasions when pressure is suddenly released.

Solution

The device shown is constructed of tubular steel and is adjustable to cater for a range of tyres and rims. By restraining the tyre rim and locking ring, the guard prevents impact injury to the operator.

Benefit

  • Advantages of this guard are that it is portable, robust, and adaptable to a range of tyre sizes.
  • It provides an inexpensive method of protecting workers from the risk of fatal or serious injury.
