Interlock switch protects against crushing injuries

Problem

Large retail outlets which dispose of wholesale packaging and similar wastes, often use a hydraulic refuse compactor to maximise the volume of waste to be transported.

Occasionally people have been found inside these compactors.

Solution

The company designed a steel mesh and partial polycarbonate guard to fully enclose the potential hazard. The guarding arrangements include both fixed and movable parts. All movable parts are interlocked to the machine process. When the guard is pulled down into position a limit switch operates an air cylinder which locks the guard into place. Once the guard is locked in place a second cylinder is activated and the foot pedal is released. The operation of the drop hammer is then allowed.

Benefit

  • Workers are protected from dangerous parts of the machine and potential injury.
